Which Flooring Works Best Over Radiant Heat?

Flooring affects how well a radiant heating system performs. Some materials pass heat through easily and others hold it back. Some popular types of flooring for radiant systems include:

  • Tile and stone conduct heat and hold warmth well, making them a strong pairing with a radiant system.
  • Engineered wood handles temperature changes better than solid hardwood, which can cup or gap as it expands and contracts.
  • Luxury vinyl and laminate are generally fine over radiant heat, although the manufacturer usually caps the maximum floor temperature.
  • Polished or stained concrete is an extremely efficient option, making it a practical choice for shops, basements, and modern interiors.

We can factor your flooring into the system design from the start, so the tubing layout and water temperature work together to heat your space effectively.

Can Radiant Floor Heating Be Added to an Existing Home?

Retrofits take more planning than new construction, but there's usually a workable path. If there's a basement or crawl space underneath, we can install tubing between the floor joists from below. This approach minimizes disruption by leaving existing floors alone.

For spaces without access from below, above-subfloor panel systems hold the tubing in grooved panels that sit on top of the existing subfloor. The tradeoff with panel systems is height, since they raise the floor by roughly ½ to 1½ inches.

We can evaluate your floor assembly, access, and layout to recommend a suitable option for your specific property. We also offer flexible financing options to accommodate your budget and make radiant upgrades more manageable.

From Initial Design to Warm Floors: How We Handle Your Project

Free Estimate & Site Assessment

We start by visiting your property, assessing the space, and talking through what you're trying to accomplish. You get a free quote and clear pricing before any work begins.

Heat Loss Assessment & Zone Planning

We calculate how much heat each space actually loses through walls, windows, and floors, which determines how much tubing a room needs.

Tubing Layout & Installation

We install the PEX loops according to the design, whether that means tying tubing into a slab before the pour or working beneath an existing floor.

Manifold & System Installation

We install and connect the pumps and valves. Our pros size the system to the precise load rather than relying on a generic rule of thumb.

Pressure Testing

Next, we pressurize and verify the tubing before a slab gets poured or flooring goes down.

Startup & Balancing

Once the system is running, we balance the flow across zones so every room reaches temperature the way it should.
